Coverts Cooperators
Three members of the Southington Land Conservation Trust, Fred Murray, Val Guarino and Shari Guarino recently spent a four day weekend attending the UCONN Coverts program in Great Mountain Forest, Norfolk, CT. The Coverts program provides education in forest and wildlife habitat improvement methods as well as updates on conservation practices.

Classes were held Thursday through Sunday to prepare participants to be knowledgeable in methods of improving conditions for creating healthier forests and vital habitat for declining wildlife species. As Coverts Cooperators they hope to help local residents improve conditions on their own property, large or small.

Coverts Cooperators can help landowners identify and remove non-native invasive plants and suggest ways of improving the conditions for wildlife in parcels as small as the average backyard. They also learned how to help landowners improve forested lands, often at low or no cost to the owners. They will be applying their newly acquired knowledge to our Land Trust properties as well as assisting and educating Southington residents.

Interested residents may contact the Coverts Cooperators for assistance through this website or by emailing The Coverts program at the Yale Forest Camp has been held annually for the last 30 years and is sponsored by several conservation organizations.
