Celebrating 50 years!

In March the State of Connecticut General Assembly issued an official citation to recognize the Southington Land Conservation Trust for 50 years of dedicated service to the town of Southington. Thank you to State Representative Chris Poulos for bestowing upon us this great honor!

At our Anniversary Dinner and Annual Meeting in May, we were presented with a proclamation by Town Council members Victoria Triano and Val DePaulo recognizing our contribution to Southington in preserving and protecting natural areas. We are honored to have received this and will continue our efforts to protect Southington’s natural areas in the future!

Source to Sea

What a fantastic morning of giving back to our beautiful community! 🌎 Southington Land Trust members participated in the Source to Sea Cleanup on October 22. In just two hours, more than TEN bags of litter were collected. Nip bottles continue to top the list followed by dozens of drink bottles, fast food bags, soda, coffee cups and food containers.

Our efforts went beyond just picking up litter – we cleaned the access area to the Qriver canoe launch, as well as the bridge and street areas around QRiver.

In addition to the bags of trash, they unearthed:
2 tires đźš—đźš—
1 pool floater mattress

Win a Tree Contest - Fall 2018

plantsville elementary tree

SLCT’s Education Committee was excited to team up with the Southington Elementary Schools at the beginning of the school year to promote nature among the students by sponsoring a Win a Tree contest! The local elementary schools competed to win a tree for their school by writing essays on “Why Trees Matter” and “Why Your School Should Win a Tree.” Creative and thoughtful essays were turned in to the land trust education committee at the end of September. With so many essays to choose from, it was a tough decision but Plantsville Elementary school was our winner! The winning students chose a sugar maple and it was planted in November. Check out our photo gallery on Facebook and coverage in the Meriden Record Journal .

We would like to thank Central Nurseries at 55 Victoria Highway, Chepachet, R.I. for generously donating the tree and thank you to the Assistant Superintendent of Schools, Steve Madancy, for supporting this contest as well as school staff who were instrumental in facilitating implementation.
