Exploring a Rare Habitat with CT DEEP Forester Dave Irwin

In April 2025 CT DEEP Forester Dave Irwin led members of the SLCT board and volunteers on a guided hike through our 60-acre Welch Road property. The property was generously donated by Mark Lovley.

Irwin highlighted several unique features of the site, including a rare pitch pine and scrub oak woodland habitat located on a sandy outwash plain. This increasingly uncommon ecosystem is a rarity in Connecticut. The property also features impressive wolf trees, stands of white, yellow, and gray birch, and native shrubs such as mountain laurel and willow. Plant communities across the landscape include milkweed, asters, and goldenrod, which support a variety of local pollinators.

Thank you to all who joined us for this informative and inspiring walk through one of our conservation properties.

Nature Day Festival

Despite the rainy weather, so many families from our community came out to celebrate with us in May! From getting crafty with our incredible nature-themed vendors to meeting live birds and reptiles, and learning more about the Southington Land Conservation Trust, there was something for everyone to enjoy.

In November 2024 the Southington Land Trust welcomed an invitation from CT Department of Energy & Environmental Protection’s (DEEP) Peter Picone to join a group of volunteers in a meadow seed sowing project at the CT DEEP’s Goshen Wildlife Management Area. A portion of the 627-acre property was seeded as test plots for bee and pollinator studies with The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station (CAES) entomologists Tracey Zarillo and Dr. Kelsey Fisher.

Land Trusts, Pollinator Pathways, CFPA members, and other organizations, came in from East Lyme, Manchester, West Hartford and Woodbury to volunteer.

The SLCT was invited to present for a Biology class at Central Connecticut State University on October 3, 2024 to share information about what land trusts are and the importance of them. We brought along the Connecticut Land Conservation Council to partner with us on this one. Great opportunity for us to engage with the youth and hopefully we inspired them to join their local land trust. 🎓🌳
